Working Through It Together
Relationships are hard. You go into it thinking you’re on the same team, ready for whatever comes. Then life gets complicated — kids, finances, work, the slow drift that happens when life gets busy — and somewhere along the way you start feeling more like business partners or strangers passing in the night than lovers.
I’ve trained extensively in the three major schools of couples counseling and have logged tens of thousands of hours in the room with couples. I know what tends to help, and just as importantly, what doesn’t.
How I Work
Warm but direct
I’ll ask both of you hard questions. Not to take sides — to get to what’s actually going on underneath the argument you keep having.
Insight meets action
Understanding the pattern is only half of it. We’ll work on changing it — not just in the room, but in your life together outside of it.
Laughter is allowed
Couples therapy doesn’t have to be grim. If there’s still something worth laughing about between you — and there usually is — we’ll use it.
What Couples Counseling Actually Looks Like
Couples counseling with me follows a loose four-phase arc. It’s not a rigid script — every couple is different — but this is roughly how it goes.
Find the pattern
Every couple has one. A way the conflict starts, escalates, and ends that plays out the same way every time, even when the topic changes. We start by identifying yours — because you can’t change a pattern you can’t see.
Understand what’s underneath it
Arguments about dishes and schedules are rarely about dishes and schedules. Most of what couples fight about is a proxy for something older and more fundamental — feeling unseen, feeling unvalued, feeling alone. We go looking for that.
Learn to hear each other differently
This is where change begins to unfold. New ways of saying the hard things. New ways of listening when it’s your turn. Small shifts that turn a conversation that used to end badly into one that actually moves somewhere.
Build on it
We consolidate what’s changed and look forward. What does the relationship you actually want look like — and what’s it going to take to keep building it?
Has There Been an Infidelity?
Affair recovery is its own kind of work — more intensive, more specific, and with a different set of challenges than most couples counseling. If that’s what you’re dealing with, I have a separate page that addresses it directly.
