My Story

Becoming a psychologist wasn’t always a part of my life plan. At age 23, I was a bartender with a GED, no college, and no real direction, trying to figure out what to do with my life — when out of the blue, the idea of becoming a psychologist came to me. Keep in mind, I’d never been to therapy myself, and I didn’t even know if psychologists went to grad school or med school (it turned out to be the former, lol). It just felt like the right path, in a way I couldn’t fully explain at the time.

Here’s where it gets a little weird: fifteen years later, when I had actually become a psychologist, I learned something I never knew growing up — I was adopted, and my biological father, who was killed in Vietnam, had been a psychology major with plans to become a therapist himself after his tour. Whatever the reason — genetics, instinct, something else — I’d chosen the exact right path for me with no idea I was walking one he’d once imagined for himself too.

I tell you all this because just like you, I didn’t come to this work with everything figured out. I came to it knowing what it’s like to feel yourself at sea with no plan or map on how to move forward. That’s part of what shapes how I work with people now — I help people figure out where they want to go and what the map to get there looks like.

My Approach

I’m not the kind of therapist who sits back and nods while you talk. I stay engaged in your work with you. I’ll listen closely — but I’ll also be honest with you, offer real feedback, and occasionally crack a joke when things get too heavy. Therapy should move you forward, not just give you a place to vent.

My approach is practical and grounded in what actually helps. Understanding where a pattern comes from matters, but what matters more is helping you change it. I draw from several approaches, which means I adapt to what works for you rather than fitting you into one rigid framework.

After 30 years and tens of thousands of hours in the room with real people facing real problems, I’ve learned that most people already sense something is wrong. What they need is someone who can help them see it clearly, understand it fully, and find their way through it.

What You Can Expect if You're a Couple Looking for Help

Relationships are where most of our deepest pain — and deepest joy — lives. I’ve spent the majority of my career working with couples through the full range of relationship challenges: communication breakdowns, affairs, disconnection, anger, the slow drift that happens when life gets complicated.

I’ve trained extensively in the three major schools of couples therapy and have logged tens of thousands of hours working with couples. I know what tends to help — and just as importantly, what doesn’t.

What You Can Expect if You're an Individual Looking for Help

Sometimes the work isn’t about a relationship at all — it’s about you. Anxiety that won’t quiet down. A depression that’s crept in without you noticing. Grief. A big transition. Or just the sense that something’s off and you can’t quite name it.

Men and women both come to therapy for all kinds of reasons, and there’s no one way to walk through that door. Some want a place to think out loud. Some want a plan. Some just want someone who won’t tiptoe around things. Whatever brought you here, I’ll help you get clear on what’s actually going on, and then we’ll work on doing something about it — using the same practical approach I bring to couples: understand the pattern, then change it.
